Covered by Medicare for patients with the following conditions:

• Without the use of a wheelchair he/she would otherwise be bed or chair confined, and
• Unable to operate a manual wheelchair and capable of safely operating control for the POV, and
• Can safely transfer in and out of the POV and has adequate trunk stability to be able to safely ride in the POV.

A power operated vehicle is usually covered only if it is ordered by a physician who has one of the following specialties: physical medicine, orthopedic surgery, neurology or rheumatology. When such a specialist is not reasonable accessible (e.g., more than a one day round trip from the patient's home, or the patient's condition precludes such travel), Medicare will individually consider with appropriate documentation from ordering physician.

A physician's prescription/order must be furnished to the supplier prior to delivery (WOPD).
